Glasgow Sociology seeks PhD students for Doctoral Training Centre Awards Economic and Social Research Council (DTC-ESRC))

Sociology at the University of Glasgow is part of the ESRC Doctoral Training Centre in Scotland, along with Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Stirling. It is now inviting applications from well-qualified and enthusiastic candidates who wish to pursue a PhD in any sociological or criminological topic related to the Department’s areas of substantive expertise.
The specialist research areas of members of staff to which we would particularly draw students’ attention are:
Media, Culture and Society; Human Rights; Crime and Penology; Racism, Anti-Racism and Nationalism; Migration and Integration of Migrants; Religion with particular reference to British Muslims; Post-Colonial Cultural Studies; Modern French Social Theory and, more broadly, Social and Cultural Theory; Gender and Sexuality; Health and Illness (including Disability Studies); Youth and Education; and Gambling Studies.
Any of these areas would provide a good basis for a PhD.            
Applicants for Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) studentships are expected to have an Upper Second or First Class undergraduate degree in a social science or related subject, and/or a Masters degree, or to be able to demonstrate other relevant experience. DTC studentships are available full-time for 3 years or 4 years, or part-time for 5 years:
•             3 year (+3) awards are for candidates who already have an ESRC -  recognised Masters degree (MRes) or a similar level of research methods training or experience
•             4 year (1+3) awards are for students to undertake the MRes in Sociology and Research Methods, the MRes in Criminology or the M Res in Equality and Human Rights, followed by a 3 year PhD
•             5 year awards (+5) are undertaken on a part-time basis following a Masters (MRes) degree.

DTC studentships are worth £13,590 per annum (2011-12) and do not attract income tax or national insurance. PhD students are also encouraged, to undertake some paid undergraduate teaching in the Department.
