the criminology and criminal justice network
The African continent is full of unlimited opportunities and resources including human resources. In Nigeria for instance, there are countless natural endowments such as petroleum, cocoa, timber, groundnut, cassava, coal, palm oil, arable farm land, and so on.
But with the above mentioned resources, Nigeria is still struggling to emerge as one of the 20 most healthy economies by 2020. Various reports from both genuine and ungenuine sources have said that over 60 percent of Nigerians live below $1 a day. Not only that Africa is blesssed with enormous natural resources, Nigeria in particular is the number six highest exporter of crude oil in the world. But the question is, why are Nigerians poor? Why are they suffering? Why are they struffling to travel out of Nigeria, trooping out in millions?
What must we do to maintain good management structures? How can we erradicate corruption and enthrone transparency?
Our educational sector has drifted from it original state to what many believe to be "money affairs". There is no more sanity in public institutions. How can we restore nolmacy? How can we erradicate political violence and electoral malpractices? How can we manage terrorism (boko haram and ethnic violence).
Anyone who has an answer should come forward with it as a way of addressing the issues of insecurity in Africa, especially in Nigeria.

Permalink Reply by mario a garcia on January 29, 2012 at 2:20 its very unfortunate, that people in Africa lagged behind civilization. too much politics and selfish motives. no wonder that Africans are fleeing their own country in search of a peaceful place to live in.
my initial reaction upon reading this public appeal is that, it is only God and faith in him can restore Africa, but how? in my humble opinion, it may take centuries of painstaking quest to help elevate the sanity of the African people. the united nations must spearhead the actions or steps to be taken thereto. like for example, takings steps to intervene in their political affairs by sending observers during and after elections and let all events therein published globally. any violation observed and reported to the UN, the UN shall take necessary moves to correct or penalize the violating political person or group, in that way, those who will be opting to run for governance in Africa would think several times before doing so. the rest may follow after the political situation is put into rest.
Dear Mario,
Thank you for your wise comment.
I can agree with you that African continent is lagging behind as far as civilization and globalization are concerned.
But I must also express the joy I have, that many people are now embracing new concept about politics and leadership. One of the problems that Africa nations have had over the time is militaristic mentality of our past leaders before the advent of democracy. Our leaders were more of dictators instead of "Servant Leaders." This made those who follow them to adopt autocratic system instead of universal democracy.
Democracy as they say, is the government of the people, by the people, and for the people. African compatriots, who have good concepts and mindsets were not only terrorized but were seen as instrument of obstruction; the corrupt leaders see them their 'arch enemies' and they seek after their lives and well being. You may also wish to know that new crop of leaders are emerging in Africa on daily basis. All we need are: support, training and re-orientation, international cooperation and integration, sustainable fight against corruption, enhanced education, security, human rights, industrialization, entrepreneurial development, women and youth empowerment and so on.
Moreover, Nigeria is the giant of Africa in terms of population, human and natural endowment. But we have problem of CORRUPTION! I am joining you Mario to appeal to the United Nation to come to our aid so that the current fight against corruption and terrorism which President Jonathan has promised to tackle should will become a reality. In addition, the UN should do its best to fast-track and facilitate the "Credit Unit" which it has proposed for Africa; through the appointment of Dr. Boniface Afifia-Oru, whom I think is the best man for the job! He is a brain and a true leader! There are people who are opposing his appointment as the Honourable High Commissioner for Credit for Africa. Those are afraid that he will not allow them to corruptly enrich themselves. But I know the UN as an unbiased body that is built open integrity and justice.
As a student, I am great effort to create a website which will specifically deal with breeding a new crop of leaders in Nigeria which will serve as a mirror to other African countries. My twin brother, Martins and I have founded an NGO (Twins Initiative Network). Our aim is to empower the youths, both boys and girls through social interactions; advocacy; education, affiliation with other professional bodies, issues of gender and women empowerment, the less privilege. Anyone who would like to support or work with us is welcomed!
Nigeria must rise! Africa must rise! Corruption must go! Good leaders must emerge!
I look forward to see more White Papers on the above issues raised in my first post.
I appreciate your concern and love for rapid development in Africa.
