UK travel fund

The Higher Education Academy has launched a UK travel fund that will help staff and students in UK higher education to exchange and disseminate good practice in learning, teaching and assessment, and engage with their peers.

There are a couple of notable articles in ELiSS, one of which is from the LTN's own Phil Johnson. Phil says his paper proposes 'the use of visual assessment methods for students in the social sciences at the University of the Future'. He argues against the hegemony of the written word through the suggestion that photography can overcome many problems and provide 'appropriate learning experiences for the digital world'. Invitation to BSC LTN inaugural meeting

Date: 14th October 2011
Time: 1-4pm
Venue:  Academic Practice Room, CeLT, 2nd Floor, Cavendish North, Manchester Metropolitan University ( for map see herehttp://www.celt.mmu.ac.uk/about_celt/contact.php )

The BSC recently launched its Learning and Teaching Network and we would now like to extend an invitation to the wider membership of the BSC to join us and become involved in a range of activities to develop expertise in the teaching of Criminology.
The LTN is interested in hearing from anyone with a passion for learning and teaching and specifically those interested in taking on responsibility for one or more of the support roles below:

  • Co-ordination of regional workshops.
  • Email list manager.
  • Project funding. We have a funding budget and will announce calls for projects relevant to learning and teaching, support conference attendance and launch a Professional Development Award to assist with the cost of early career members’ continued professional development.
  • Development of ‘Crimspace’ to include learning and teaching issues.
  • Liaison with the Higher Education Academy to access activities and support, for example to provide media training to BSC members which would enhance our potential to place media articles about the Society and the discipline more generally.
  • A presence at the BSC Annual Conference – learning and teaching will have a dedicated strand at future annual conferences including an early careers event at the PhD conference.
  • Articles in the BSC newsletter and links with existing learning and teaching journals (for example ELiSShttp://www.eliss.org.uk/Default.aspx) – to provide avenues for members who have an interest in this area to see their ideas and interests published.
  • National Teaching Award.
  • Co-ordination of a ‘Teaching Tips’ section of the website.
  • Book review and recommendations relevant to learning and teaching.

The British Society of Criminology’s Learning and Teaching Network (BSC LTN) has been awarded a bursary by the Higher Education Academy (specialist network C-SAP) to support the above work in promoting learning, teaching and professionalism generally in the discipline.

Please confirm your attendance and any items for the agenda to the LTN chair Helen Jones h.jones@mmu.ac.uk
Two travel bursaries of £50 are available to early career members to assist their attendance at this meeting. Please apply directly to Helen Jones by Monday 3rd October.

The call for bids in the Higher Education Academy's second phase of teaching development grants is now open.

Over the next year the HEA is making £1.5 million of funding available for teaching development grants.  The funding will stimulate evidence-based research and encourage innovations in learning and teaching that have the potential for sector-wide impact.

The second phase of the scheme, is aimed at higher education institution departments, with a total of £300,000 being made available up to a maximum of £30,000 per project. Bids are invited on the themes of Employability and/or Internationalisation. Successful bids will demonstrate team impact across the department.
The closing date for departmental bids is 23 October 2011, with successful projects expected to begin on 23 January 2012.

Further information on the teaching development grants can be found at http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/funding
