Some of you might know that I have recently taken up the position of Discipline Lead for Sociology at the Higher Education Academy. The HEA supports a large network of learning and teaching practitioners involved in sociology and criminology throughout the UK. It was the HEA that provided the funding for the BSC LTN and for some future funded project (more on this soon). I’ll be providing funding, events, resources and a large number of opportunities to network with learning and teaching practitioners from a variety of institutions and roles. It will be my task to promote learning and teaching developments and to establish and build on relationships between the HEA, institutional departments and professional associations including the BSC and the BSA. I hope to work closely with many of you in the near future.
A number of significant opportunities are currently on offer from the HEA which I would like our subject areas to take advantage of. These include:
1. Teaching Development Grants: this academic year there will be another round of grants for individual projects and collaborative projects.
2. Workshops and Seminars: Departments can claim up to £1000 to host an event as well as £500 to cover the costs of an external speaker.
3. Travel funding is available to enable lecturers and students to attend learning and teaching events in the UK, as well as an international scholarship fund to enable academics to experience teaching practice overseas.
For further information and application forms for the above three opportunities, please visit www.heacademy.ac.uk/funding. Please contact me if you would like my support and advice.
The HEA is also seeking to recruit Academic Associates. If you are interested in undertaking some paid work, and if you have not already done so, please send us your CV. For more information about how to proceed, go to www.heacademy.ac.uk/academic-associates.
I am very keen to visit UK departments to discuss these opportunities and to talk about the work of the HEA more generally. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any help or if you would like me to visit you.
