Comment by Maggie Hall on April 4, 2012 at 20:23: Re Fabio's question - wouldn't it depend on the legislation in your jurisdiction. Here a "short sentence is one where the court sets the non parole period and the prisoner is entitled to release,( 2yrs and under), with all other sentences the prisoner has to be assessed by the Parole Authority and can be refused parole until they are satisfied that the prisoner will comply with the terms of the order.

Re Ciara's question - both here and in many other jurisdictions very little "therapy"is conducted outside of offence specific cognitive behavioral programmes in prison - the rise of these programmes and evidence that rehab occurs better outside prison has led to much of the resources being transferred outside the prison. Very little individual counselling goes on in prisons in NSW, and I believe it is the same in jurisdictions such as Canada.

I am writing a piece of training for trainee counsellors and pscyhotherapists looking to take on a placement in a forensic setting. I would like if possible to get people's personal experience on what therapy is like in the prison service, what the role of the therapist is and their responsibilities and if anyone knows of any research looking into the effectiveness of counselling and psychotherapy in these settings and with offenders. Can anyone offer any advice?

Mainly I am trying to understand what is the time frame for considering a sentence as being short term: what is the definition? is it made ad-hoc depending on the purpose of the study or is it there an agreed definition of what a short term sentence is?

thank you for this.I have checked with both uni and prison. In order, the priority is for IRAS, then prison and uni will be able to accept the same forms sent to prison/IRAS.

I either gained ethical approval from my Uni or at least had sent off the application before applying through IRAS. NOMS are happy for you to start the process without full consent from your Uni but they will require proof you have ethical approval from your Uni before they finally give consent.

Regarding your other query, i do not remember being told that, I will look at the form and get back to you. Anne

Comment by Fabio on March 19, 2012 at 21:25: Another way to go round their concerns (and given your exploratory stage) is to let them speak about "the others": it takes the pressure out and it is not going to affect them directly if they say something "wrong" as it's not them.

(it's a technique used in psychology and is supposed to go round people's defences and concerns in relation to being judged (e.g. when talking about racism) - if you talk about what the others think or what the others do, the image of you other people have of you won't be jeopardised as you can always get out from judgements by saying "it's not me we're talking about".

I would be happy to hear how it goes! when is the research going to take place?
