Starting research within a prison or the CJS could be quite daunting. The best way to start is having some guidance and ideas about what to do, where to do it and how to do it.Please use this section…Continue

Hello all! I've just thought this might be a way to keep a window on the efforts that most of us make in getting something published out there. It might be a possibility to get a chance to let the…Continue

Comment by Carolyn McKay on October 31, 2012 at 3:39 Hi, I'm doing my PhD in criminology at the University of Sydney focussing upon the experience of inmates when 'appearing' in court by video link. I've just commenced my interviews with prisoners and would be interested in any suggested literature regarding prison ethnography please. Thank you!
Comment by Ciara Wild on April 12, 2012 at 9:02 I Maggie, Thank you for your response. It's been a great help to me and interesting to hear how therapy works in prisons in other countries. Many thanks.
Comment by Fabio on April 11, 2012 at 19:40 Hi again,
I am trying to find some articles or reports providing an estimate or real figures about prisoners' use of resettlement services within prison (e.g. housing, family, drug use etc). Is it there anywhere I could find those?
Thank you very much,
Fabio
Comment by Fabio on April 11, 2012 at 19:36 Hi Maggie,
thank you for your answer. I might guess it is. I have an idea that short sentences are those of less than 1 year.. but I need to check against formal data.
Comment by Maggie Hall on April 4, 2012 at 20:23 Re Fabio's question - wouldn't it depend on the legislation in your jurisdiction. Here a "short sentence is one where the court sets the non parole period and the prisoner is entitled to release,( 2yrs and under), with all other sentences the prisoner has to be assessed by the Parole Authority and can be refused parole until they are satisfied that the prisoner will comply with the terms of the order.
Re Ciara's question - both here and in many other jurisdictions very little "therapy"is conducted outside of offence specific cognitive behavioral programmes in prison - the rise of these programmes and evidence that rehab occurs better outside prison has led to much of the resources being transferred outside the prison. Very little individual counselling goes on in prisons in NSW, and I believe it is the same in jurisdictions such as Canada.
Comment by Ciara Wild on April 4, 2012 at 14:40 Hi everyone, I wondered if I could ask for help from some of the members of this group. I am writing a piece of training for trainee counsellors and pscyhotherapists looking to take on a placement in a forensic setting. I would like if possible to get people's personal experience on what therapy is like in the prison service, what the role of the therapist is and their responsibilities and if anyone knows of any research looking into the effectiveness of counselling and psychotherapy in these settings and with offenders. Can anyone offer any advice?
Comment by Fabio on April 4, 2012 at 13:29 Hello all,
just a request as it's not something I have been dealing with before and I can't find an answer on journals.
Mainly I am trying to understand what is the time frame for considering a sentence as being short term: what is the definition? is it made ad-hoc depending on the purpose of the study or is it there an agreed definition of what a short term sentence is?
Thank you very much,
Fabio
Comment by Fabio on March 26, 2012 at 14:15 Hi Anne,
thank you for this.I have checked with both uni and prison. In order, the priority is for IRAS, then prison and uni will be able to accept the same forms sent to prison/IRAS.
Hi Fabio,
I either gained ethical approval from my Uni or at least had sent off the application before applying through IRAS. NOMS are happy for you to start the process without full consent from your Uni but they will require proof you have ethical approval from your Uni before they finally give consent.
Regarding your other query, i do not remember being told that, I will look at the form and get back to you. Anne
