Life begins in prison

In Hungary there are several education groups in prisons. At the top of an education group an educator is sitting, he is a member of the staff and he does mainly social work in very unique sense. The educator is responsible for all administrative questions which rely on the prisoner. If an inmate wants to know how much money he has on his account, he has to write an application to the educator:“Dear Ms/Mr Educator! Please be so kind to inform me how much money I have on my account.Explanation: I…See More

Female offenders - why we have to speak about them?

There is only one unit for the women placed in maximum security regime in Hungary. If a severe problem occurs to these inmates there is no other place in the country to place them. For instance if they attack a prison officer violently in the prison, on the next day they have to stay in the same prison with the same staff. Or if they have a fight with other inmates, they remain also in the unit on the next day. This is sad. The only exclusion is to transfer these ladies to the psychiatry,…See More

A Gypsy

This story is a patchwork story, it never happened in the real world, but somehow it is true on a higher level than any real story. He was an overweight inmate with an almost symbiotic relationship with his mother. He was placed into the kitchen...

During a conference on humane criminal justice I received a phone call, but I could not answer it. At the end of the lunch break I called back, and an excellent criminologist was on the other end of the line, and she told me, that recently there was an HIV and HCV blood sample testing in a Hungarian prison among volunteer inmates. The result was dramatic.I told the story for my both neighbors. One of them was a former teacher of mine. Her husband works in the prison respected. "There was a…See More

Top stories are coming out when the camera is off

A gifted TV reporter told me that his crew spent three weeks in a Hungarian prison. They were in the prison for a week just to be not alienated in the prison situation and to find the words which are used by the staff or breaking the ice. In Hungary it is not easy to make a documentary in a prison. The staff is mainly not authorized to say a word without a previous and exclusive permission from the management. This is a quite frequent situation also in other prisons of the world. There are some…See More

Situational homosexuality in prison

One major lesson of the famous Philip Zimbardo (he is 81!!!) Stanford Prison Experiment is that those who play guarding or prisoner role in a simulated prison act more influenced by the situation (the prison setting) than by the predispositional factors (personality traits or SES etc.).This is not only a social psychological issue but also a major topic of penology.Who is the prisoner in the prison? What influences the behavior of a prisoner in the prison, the prison roles (prison predators,…See More

Retribution harms society more severe than crime

Retribution is a unique feeling or urge in the mind of some police or/and prison officers to punish criminals for their deed also over the legal procedures and sanctions. This motivation roots deeper in the personality of those officials. The socio-economical status (SES) of some prison officers is even worse than the SES of the majority of prisoners.Low SES officers frequently tend to behaviors like sexism, ethnocentrism or racism. However these items are only in the superficial character of…See More
