Budget cuts, proposals for elected Commissioners, and the wooing of US ‘supercop’ Bill Bratton are evidence of a more adversarial relationship between the Conservatives and the police in the UK.

We find ourselves in novel times. For the past 30 years the Conservative Party has done all in its power to ensure that it was the policeman’s friend.
